TalentHQ - award winning recruitment specialists - focusses on employers management style - are you leading up or are you leading down?

Are we leading up or managing down?

People don't leave companies they leave managers.

This is a statement that has been out there now for some time. What do people think? If you are a disgruntled ex employee you are probably thinking this is true and if you are a manager glad to see the back of a particular employee you may be thinking they weren't the right fit for the business anyway.

Is there a right and wrong answer? If you think you're right then, in your world, you are, there are always different perspectives.

If you are a manager, ask yourself this question: Are you leading your team or are you managing down? If you are an employee are you being led or managed down?

What is the difference?

Who inspires you? Who do you admire? Whose qualities and behaviours draw you to want to be your best and whose rewards you would like as a result? Are these people drawing you to them? Are you wanting to model their behaviour or naturally doing it because it is so infectious you cannot help but be drawn to it? Does it bring out the best in you? Make you want to do and be your best?

Or are we being told or telling people what to do so as to fit into what we want and therefore not being an encourager and allowing people to grow and be the best version of themselves?

The best way we can affect change is by being the change we want to see.
