Talent HQ - Recruitment consultancy offering desirable jobs in Hertfordshire – gives tips on how to make the right first impression

Publish On 26-02-2015 , 4:40 PM

The Talent HQ team – recruitment professionals, offering full and part time jobs in Hertfordshire – offer guidance to candidates, helping them to secure the jobs they are seeking.

Our focus for February is how to make the right first impression. If you are looking for a full or part time job in Hertfordshire, our friendly team are ready to equip you with all you need to obtain the right interview and to be successful.

This month’s ‘First Impression’ tips are:

  •  Preparation and making the right first impression go hand-in-hand. Whilst they intertwine, the latter generally follows on from preparation. Last month, we looked in more detail at how you can best prepare for an interview. By considering what you’ll need to do in advance, how to dress and so on, you will instantly help yourself to feel more confident.

  •  How you look will obviously play a huge part in the image you portray to your potential employer and colleagues. The messages that you send in the first few seconds are likely to stay with those that you meet for the first time. It is not all about clothing and grooming though, as we noted last month, this does need your attention. The most important thing is that your attire is appropriate. A smart suit and shoes will usually serve you well. It also relates to being punctual. If you rush in, flustered at the beginning of the meeting, with beads of perspiration dropping from your forehead and making excuses, this will of course, be detrimental.

  •  What you do. Your body language, and demeanour will contribute tremendously. For example, making good eye contact, giving a warm and assertive smile, giving a firm handshake and adopting a calm disposition will convey positive messages to your interviewer. Be conscious of nervous mannerisms you may have and aim to keep them in check. Listen attentively to what they say and ensure your behaviour is courteous Remember to switch off your mobile phone in advance.

  •  What you say. Find common ground with your interviewer, if possible. This will establish dialogue and help to keep it flowing. It isn’t just what you say that is important, it is how you say it, too. Be polite when you speak, avoid interrupting and answer questions carefully.

  • First impressions can rarely be undone. If you are seeking full or part time jobs in Hertfordshire, call 01438 487260 or email: findmeajob@talenthq.co.uk today to see how we can hone your skills for that one big chance.
